Eldar Blade Concept - I by Aikurisu Eldar Blade Concept - I by Aikurisu
Well, here's the first Eldar fanart I've drawn so far, although stay tuned for tomorrow-- there should be another by then. =)

As some might know, I think it was roughly during my highschool years when I first heard about the Warhammer universe.

It was an expensive hobby, I'll admit, but I was proud of my humble High Elf model collection and if I had the chance I would have also created an Eldar army as well. But alas in those days the local store never stocked in any models related to them, so I ended up buying a couple of Imperial Guard models instead... like a Hellhound Tank, some Tallarn Desert Raiders, etc.

Fortunately for me and likely a lot of other people, however, the Warhammer 40k universe went beyond the expensive model collecting and came to the video game market. And now with my epic comp I can enjoy playing as the Eldar whenever I like! (Thanks again, Phil!) Everything comes prepainted, and everything is animated! Yay! So much cheaper than models... yes...

Plus... well, Dawn of War II is awesome and it's been a great inspiration of late. Sooo... here's a power sword for ya all!

There's probably tabletop miniatures who already wield it, since I adopted the design from a rule book. =D

Great concept, your style looks even more refined and somehow different from your previous works. Never played anything from Warhammer series but I really adore the concept art and artbooks, astonishing character designs :D

P.S. Thanks for suggesting my art for the fantasy feature. ;)

No worries! And well, hey, you would have done the same for me. =P

Glad you like how this came out, btw! And how so, by what you meant about this looking different from my previous works? You mean for this work just recent or...?

I don't mind the Warhammer series to a point, but I just wish there was a bit more behind it than just war in itself. Sure, I understand that's what the universe is all about, but I wish there was more information on the Eldar civilisations at least. Otherwise I feel there's a lot of guesswork to be made...

It's interesting...if you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have realized this was an Eldar sword. You do a great job of making it hard to tell if it's a magic or technological weapon. And as I think every time I fave one of your weapons...DUDE I WANT ONE OF THOSE!!!

Haha, well this is a positive thing! Glad you find my weapon concepts awesome enough for that. =D

I think next time I draw an Eldar weapon though I'll try to be a bit more adventurous. Not that there's anything wrong with keeping true to what's already designed... I drew this one close to a couple of references I saw around the place, especially with the shape of the blade, as it's similar to the stock blades the Banshee gals use in DoW2.

It was mostly because I didn't see any cable-like thingies that might've given its technological nature away. Of course I don't know much about 40K, so maybe the Eldar use magic technology or something, and I'm just unawares.

Hmm, I'm not well-versed in the technology of the Eldar, but from what I understand a lot of is influenced by psychic forces, although there's also plasma and a few other kinds of alien tech that certainly look impressive when in use. This power sword I think is strengthened by psychic energy stored in the crystal battery that forms part of its hilt, making it far more unbreakable and capable of slicing through some pretty deadly stuff. But I'm only speculating.

Anyhoo, you should try out Dawn of War II. It's a great crash course into the 40k universe. =)

Of course, it certainly isn't my fav sci fi universe by a long shot. Too violent...

Yeah, that's what I've heard as well. Though that's not what makes me leery of it so much as the fact that there's no one a guy like me could really root for. The Imperium are fanatical brutes who seek to destroy anything that is not like them, the forces of Chaos are just disgusting, the Eldar are repressed, arrogant and paranoid, the Tyranids are mindless destroyers, the Tau are fascists, the Dark Eldar are sadomasochistic monsters, and the Orks...well, they're the Orks.

Hmm, all good points. I've learnt to get around it though a little by creating forces not directly associated with the stock information on each race. Take the Eldar for instance. I've essentially created my own craftworld that has no ties with the politics of the others. Its people are seen as wayward and are a little different in certain ways from their other known kin, but that doesn't really make them inferior. I think I read somewhere that the creators of 40k basically said that if you create something in the universe, chances are it can exist. So I'm keeping an open mind towards it all.

I'm not really a fan of the Space Marines, but the Imperial Guard within the Imperium are likeable in the sense that they're just ordinary soldiers fighting for a cause, no matter how fanatical and distorted from good it is. Chaos, Tyranids, Orks... well, they make great target practice, I'll give them that. The Tau I can respect, and at least they don't sound as destructive as the Imperium in their goals. But then I haven't really read too much into them.

I think what it all comes down to though is that no race is perfect in 40k, and it kinda gives it a realistic charm because of. Still, I much prefer something like the Star Wars universe easily over it.

That's true, but it's the stock information that's made 40K such a memorable game. While I don't really like the universe from an outside standpoint, I can admire the dark humor it seems to have, where the Orks seem like the most sane out of all of them. Whereas the others fight for lost causes and commit terrible atrocities because of their delusions, the Orks just fight because it's what they do. That blunt honesty's kind of refreshing.

I remember once a friend of mine was planning a 40K-based roleplay in which the God Emperor finally recovered and allowed non-humans to fight alongside his troops to set the Universe straight. Rather than a high-and-mighty Space Marine or a honest-and-tough Imperial Guard soldier, I asked if I could play a crazy Ork who joined the Xeno squad because he was impressed by the huge guns the Imperium had. Had the game actually gotten off the ground, he would have acted like a kid at Christmas around all the WMDs, and rode into battle on a chopper equipped with a tape-deck that he used to blare Steppenwolf's classic "Born To Be Wild," except when he sang along it'd be "Born To Be WAAAAAGH!!!"

It's that kind of ridiculousness that makes 40K unique.

lol, indeed. Although would Steppenwolf exist in that universe? =P

I think from that kind of standpoint many games would be much more fun. Allowing a mix and match affair with different races, I mean. That was one of WoW's ultimate shortcomings for me, because it just made no sense to split things into two factions only, where it would have been sensible to instead have a neutral, middle ground. May have even given Blizzard more freedom with their story writing than being limited to WoW's countless restrictions.

Anyhoo, in 40k's case, wasn't there something about many Eldar engaging in piratical affairs? Certainly a middle ground there.

Would be awesome if the God Emperor did recover. Would make for a far more interesting universe. That and the Eldar Goddess Isha escaping Nurgle and returning back to watch over her children. That there would be a pretty convincing argument about saving the Eldar from extinction, since she is associated with healing, fertility and the harvest.
