Seven Samurai Stamp

Description

When it comes to regrets, if there is one that comes to mind pretty well, it's the thought of never seeing Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece, Seven Samurai.

Fortunately, I saw it for the first time earlier this year, but that still begs the question why I never saw it a decade or two earlier. Granted, I'm glad I saw it as an adult because, like many great movies, it sometimes requires an adult mind to truly appreciate every single minute on screen. There is not a single thing I can fault about this film, (except the fate of one particular character I'll always mourn), and despite it being in black and white, (yes, it's that old), something like that doesn't detract anything from the beautiful cinematography you'll witness from beginning to end. It actually enhances it, although it would be nice to know some colours, should one ever consider drawing fanart...

But that's enough from me. I don't have the right vocabulary to give it the honour it deserves, so all I'll say is this: If you don't watch it, you'll regret it.

(I'm refraining from showing a trailer link to this film, too, as you're definitely better off watching it without seeing anything beforehand. Trust me.)

And if anyone is curious, this stamp is animated. For some reason it won't loop, though...

Alright. I know it will sound pretentious.

But I don't care.

If you call yourself a big fan of Japanese culture (I'm looking at you, weaboos), yet you've never seen a Kurosawa film... stop calling yourself a fan of the culture. These aren't hard movies to come by. You don't have an excuse. If you can spend hours watching Haruhi Suzimaya and playing Persona 3, you can watch some goddamn Kurosawa.

As for Seven Samurai... easily a top five for me. Up there with Taxi Driver, Aliens, Pulp Fiction, and Gone With the Wind. Although... in the same way that I like Jackie Brown more than I do Pulp Fiction, I feel I like Ran more than I do Seven Samurai. Maybe. I'm not sure yet.

Also, if you're a big fan of Kurosawa.... see one of his contemporaries, Kenji Mizoguchi. Especially see Sansho the Bailiff and Ugetsu.
