"To lose the body you were born with, only to take a form that defies mortal laws, one could say those who achieve this have found the path of the undying and know that some realms once forbidden to man are now theirs to seek solace with."
-- Nelri Scholar

Nimaera, once destined to lead her people, the Nelri, across unknown stars to find their new homeworld in the far reaches of their galaxy, was the victim of a terrorist attack while her soul was still linked with the command core of one of the Three Sister ships in the Nelri's Divine Fleet. In the chaos she lost her former body and was unexplainably, unknowingly sentenced to centuries of exile within a small vessel that she, in her fleeting moments of control, jettisoned far from the fleet without a living crew and in confusion and panic used as a shell to protect her soul as it drifted deep into the dark vacuum of space, never allowing her to find eternal peace in the afterlife as a result. She endured sadness no mortals could comprehend. She endured madness as the years went by and in time clawed back her sanity, coming to terms that she had become a ghost in a tomb of her own making, forevermore.

Yet her tomb was found in time by a passing vessel. She feared its crew, knowing they were not her people and in fear pushed away their curiosity by haunting them. They sold her tomb to a gullible merchant she feared as well, and so for a time she watched as her tomb was exchanged between naive hands until its last haunted owner looked to discard it at the black market on a faraway world, looking to find another fool who would buy it from them.

Sure enough, there was. By then everyone knew that the old nelri vessel had an infamous past of being haunted, and with few clues to its origin still, even the proprietors of the black market it was sold on were amazed that someone still wanted to risk purchasing an item that sent some of its owners mad and others driven away in fear. That was until it fell into the hands of an eccentric young man who was equally drawn to the tales as he was drawn to the history of the vessel, knowing its origin. Being a self-proclaimed ship engineer and a connoisseur of antiquated items, he spent a small fortune in obtaining it and initially believed that the haunting tales it gathered around it was due to a faulty, rogue AI system. By his own confession he was happily wrong and to her dismay did not back down in trying to understand her, even when she tried haunting him as a holographic entity wandering the ship.

Nimaera's life was nothing short of interesting after that. After earning her trust, the man she grew fond of eventually convinced her to step out from her old tomb in a physical body that became her new shell to contain her soul. At first she resisted the idea of possessing a biorobotic body that was originally designed for sexual encounters after being infamously known on the black market as a 'pleasure bod', yet she trusted the man's intentions for it to only help her regain some of her old life back, knowing he cared for her more than she did. And so it was said she began to walk the path of the undying, never travelling too far from her old tomb and the man who kept it safe. She no longer adhered to the mortal laws that could kill a man, fascinated by her basic grasp of immortality. And so it was that she grew fond of one thing she always sought solace with. Water. To her it was a link to her past, knowing it comforted her soul and that her new body could survive without the breath of air. Yet despite this it was never enough to hide the truth. She would never be who she once was. She would never breathe true life again.

Well, A few months ago, I received a nice gift from ~WanderingTempest in the guise of a 12 month subscription for this place. Not many folks are that generous to me, so I asked if there was anything he would like a drawing of and so here we are! It's strangely been almost a year, too, since I've drawn Nimaera and, while I intended to draw something far more sensual for Nim as per the request, I kinda liked drawing this one instead. XD (More to come, though!) So anyhoo! I guess this will be my last work for '12. Hope you like and may the new year be one of many miracles and good things for you all!

Gorgeous picture and very intriguing story to go along with it. Maybe I can look forward to a more detailed account of her history with other pictures :squee:

Thanks Kerrie. =D Pictures are a definite, too, including history... if you don't mind it being only in my usual lore style for now. =)

Point taken. =P In that case you'll definitely see more story for Nim; just not in the way I'm planning for surprisingly the bounty hunter that got the most votes...

I really love how this turned out, definitely better than I could have ever imagined. And the corresponding story to accompany the picture... Simply beautiful, my friend. Well done all around. ^_^
